Robert Woods (1754-1831)
The Woods brothers, Archibald, Andrew, and Robert, were a well-known trio who settled in the Wheeling area during the late 1700s. Buried in Mt. Woods is one of those brothers, Robert Woods (1754-1831), his wife Elizabeth Eoff Woods (1778-1832), their son, Andrew Poage Woods (1799-1862), his wife Elizabeth Good Woods (1801-1850), and their children, John Good Woods and Joseph G. Woods. This cemetery was the original Woods family burial ground and is reportedly named in their honor.
The marker on Robert Wood’s gravestone says: “In memory of Robert T. Woods Who departed this life July 17, 1831, aged 77 years, 9 months and 12 days.” Their family section is on the western slope of the hill, facing North Wheeling and the Ohio River. His son, Robert C. Woods, is credited with laying out the cemetery – he was a surveyor and had a house on Main Street in North Wheeling, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is not far from the family burying ground.
Robert Woods was an important player in the development of Wheeling, holding several important positions in early city government and local commerce.
