George B. Caldwell (1840-1916) was studying law in Washington, PA when the Civil War broke out. He volunteered for the Union and grew to respect the service of Black soldiers, who he felt "had as much right to die" as he did. Portrayed by Art Musicaro
Sue Smith Caldwell (1845-1922) was a southern sympathizer during the Civil War. She and her half brother were Confederate smugglers, yet she married a former Union soldier after the war. Portrayed by Vicky Musicaro
Mary, the daughter of a partner in the Hobbs-Brockunier glassworks, was married to Dr. Robert W. Hazlett (1828-1899). Dr. Hazlett served as a Union surgeon during the Civil War and had banking and business interests after the war. Portrayed by Kate Quinn
This Annapolis graduate left the Union navy at the beginning of the Civil War and then had a significant role as a member of the Confederate navy. After the war he served as the Wheeling city engineer and was responsible for the building of the Main Street bridge. Portrayed by Carson Cox
This daughter of Jacob Hornbrook (the "soldier's friend" during the Civil War) was married to John Goshorn Kelley, a colonel in the 12th West Virginia Infantry and the son of Union General Benjamin Franklin Kelley. Portrayed by Jeanne Finstein
As a member of the Virginia legislature at the beginning of the Civil War, Hubbard defied most of his colleagues and refused to support Virginia's secession from the Union. He was then a prominent member of the Wheeling Conventions, which led to West Virginia's statehood. Portrayed by Travis Henline
This wealthy widow was the mother of two Confederate soldiers and the mother and mother-in-law of Union soldiers. Her son Edwin was a member of the Wheeling-based, Confederate "Shriver Grays." He was mortally wounded during the South's retreat from Gettysburg. Portrayed by Gael Fincham
This Union soldier's service in an artillery company during the Civil War is evident from his grave marker. He served as a member of the Wheeling-based Carlin's Battery and survived imprisonment in the horrendous Confederate Andersonville Prison. After the war he returned to the stogie-making business. This Irish immigrant was Captain of Battery D, First West Virginia Light Artillery - nicknamed "Carlin's Battery." The unit saw hard service during the Civil War and lost 18 men to Confederate capture - six of whom died at Andersonville prison and another two in the Sultana riverboat disaster as they tried to return home after the war. Ellen White tells the story of her husband, a Confederate veteran of the Civil War. After the war, he was instrumental in founding the state Institution for the Deaf, Dumb, and Blind in Romney. This Fairmont native served in the Confederate infantry and cavalry during the Civil War. After the war, he became a successful defense attorney, known for his involvement in sensational cases. A Confederate supporter, Adams was barely 20 years old when he joined the Shriver Grays at the beginning of the Civil War. As part of General Thomas Jackson's brigade, they stood with him "like a stone wall" at First Manassas/Bull Run. This Bethany College graduate became the editor of the Wheeling Daily Intelligencer when he was in his early 20s. He was a strong advocate of the Union during the Civil War and became known as the right arm of the Restored Government of Virginia.
